Day One - Welcome to Whisky Country

Transport: Executive vehicle & Private Driver Guide

Accommodation: The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links

At last, you have finally made it to what will be your most memorable holiday to date!
When you arrive at Edinburgh (or Glasgow) airport, you will take the connecting flight to Islay.

Upon your arrival, you will be greeted by your chauffeur guide at the arrivals gate, who will take you from the airport to The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links. Here you can take full advantage of the hotel’s facilities to help wind down from a long day of travel.  Its luxurious spa offers a variety of services to help you recuperate, including facials, massages, pedicures and a number of other body treatments.

Set in the dunes of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links is a popular holiday destination for avid golfers due to its 18-hole links course and excellent hospitality.  The look and feel of the hotel is low-key contemporary luxe that deliberately avoids the tartan fantasia that commonly adorns other hotels in the Highlands, providing a sense of individuality.

Day Two - Peaty Perfection on Islay

    Laphroaig, Ardbeg & Lagavulin Distilleries

Transport: Executive vehicle & private driver guide

    Accommodation: The Machrie Hotel

Once you have appeased your appetite with a luxurious breakfast, your private driver will be ready to begin your wondrous whisky tour of Islay’s most famous southern distilleries: Lagavulin, Laphroaig and Ardbeg.

Starting with the Laphroaig Distillery, you will be taken on a unique whisky experience where you will learn more about its rich past.  The distillery will have felt like they were awarded the crown in 1994 when Prince Charles issued the Islay operation with a Royal Warrant – becoming the first and only whisky distillery to be recognised by the Prince of Wales.

Unsurprisingly, it is reputed that the Laphroaig 15 year old is his favourite dram, adding a regal tinge to its character which helps to raise it above other malts.

Next you will visit the Lagavulin distillery. The tour will show how the distillers do their work as well demonstrating the complex process that contributes to Lagavulin’s complex peaty character.

After delving into Lagavulin’s magic, your driver will escort you to the nearby world-famous Ardbeg distillery. Ardbeg’s white-washed walls can be found nestling in a rocky cove the southern tip of Islay’s rugged shores.

The distillery produces arguably the finest whiskies in the world, due to the international recognition it receives through revered connoisseurs that have described Ardbeg as being ‘as close to perfection as makes no difference.’ During the tour, you will see how the golden liquid is made as well as being treated to a few drams at the end.

After gaining a full insight into one of Islay’s prestigious distilleries, you will be chauffeured back to the Machrie Hotel for an evening of relaxation.

Day Three - A Taste of Islay

Bunnahabhain Distillery, Ardnahoe Distillery, Caol Ila Distillery, Bowmore Distillery Tour

Transport: Executive Vehicle & Private Driver Guide

    Accommodation: The Machrie Hotel

Once you have awakened, arisen and assuaged your hunger with a relaxing breakfast, your driver will continue your exploration of Islay. Your journey today will begin at the Maturation Warehouse cask tasting at Bunnahabhain Distillery. That’s right, you’ll be tasting the whisky straight from the cask!

After you have seen, learned and consumed enough Bunnahabhain, you’ll stop for lunch at the nearby Ardnahoe Distillery, where you can indulge yourself in their sumptuous menu designed to encompass a range of tastes and showcase Islay’s outstanding gastronomic fayre.

After your midday treat, the next event we have in store for you is the Whisky and Chocolate pairing at the Caol Ila Distillery, situated on the northeastern shores of the island. Be prepared to sample five expressions of Caol Ila, four of which will be aligned with a rich selection of artisan chocolates. Their unique blend of sumptuous chocolate delights and idiosyncratic whiskies will have you yearning for more but the journey must continue to our next destination, Bowmore.

Last but not least, we have the Bowmore Distillery Tour to wrap up a fine day of events. Here in Islay’s capital, their tours will give you a privileged insight into life behind the distillery gates and show you first hand how they work their magic. You will have the opportunity to experience almost two and a half centuries worth of history in a glass Fresh from the cask.

Soon after, Your chauffeur will escort you back The Machrie Hotel where you can reflect on an unforgettable and eventful day.

Day Four - Journey Through The Highlands

    Oban Distillery, Ben Nevis Distillery

Transport: Executive Vehicle & Private Driver Guide

    Accommodation: Inverlochy Castle Hotel

After a satisfying breakfast your private driver will be waiting and you be taken to the ferry port and bid farewell to Islay, crossing back to Kennacraig, on the mainland.

Once back on the mainland your guide will drive you along the beautiful West Coast of Scotland. Your private driver knows all the best photostops, so make sure to have your camera at the ready!

You will stop at the quaint bay town of Oban. You will take the Sensory & Flavour tour at Oban distillery.
Nestled below a steep cliff that overlooks Oban, this coastal location is home to on of the oldest distilleries in Scotland.  If time permits we recommend visiting Mccaig Tower.  Mccaig Tower looks over the town of Oban and has panoramic views over the north sea.

You will continue your journey up the west coast until you reach Fort William. You will then embark on your second distillery tour of the day, at Ben Nevis Distillery. Est. 1825 and situated at the foot of Britain’s highest mountain, this is a distillery with an unforgettable presence.

After a long day of touring you will be taken to Inverlochy Castle, your accommodation for the evening. This beautiful 19th century castle is surrounded by the luscious trees and a picturesque nearby loch.  Described by many as ‘the most prestigious hotel in Scotland’, you will enjoy an unrivalled service in these tranquil surroundings.

Day Five - Speyside Whisky Trail

    Cardhu, Balvenie and Aberlour Distilleries

Transport: Executive Vehicle & Private Driver Guide

    Accommodation: Station Hotel, Aberlour

Your drive will meet you in the morning and your Speyside Whisky tour will commence.

Arriving in to Speyside, near Archiestown you will visit Cardhu distillery.
Cardhu is one of a kind as it is the only malt distillery started by a women. Your will get an expert guided tour and taste this wonderfully smooth and mellow malt.

After soaking in the flavours of Cardhu, the next distillery on the list is the world-renowned Balvenie. A tour here is an unforgettable experience. It is often described as ‘the complete distillery’ since every part of the whisky-making process is done on-site. The drams that you will be treated with at the end will leave the tastes of sweet fruit and sherry in your mouth, making you want to stay for more.

However, the journey must continue westwards to the Aberlour Distillery that is situated alongside the River Spey. The tour will give you a profound insight into its production and at the end you will have the opportunity to sample the fruity range of malts.

The Station Hotel in Aberlour is where you will stay for the night. This traditional Scottish hotel was built on fortunes made from whisky by the local couple, Richard and Heather Forsythe. A cosy but grand place to nestle in, the Station Hotel is a jewel of Speyside and continues the whisky theme with its colourful selection of malts behind the bar. If you’re overwhelmed by the array, the bar staff will discuss your preferences and point you in the right direction.

You will have the pleasure of staying in the prestigious Macallan Suite.

Day Six - The Kings of Speyside

    Macallan, Glenlivet & Glenfiddich Distilleries

Transport: Executive vehicle & private driver guide

    Accommodation: Station Hotel, Aberlour

Macallan distillery is where you will begin today’s journey. As part of the tour, you will learn just as much of its rich past as well as their whisky production process. The tour is led by a team of experienced whisky guides who will share their extensive knowledge on whisky production with great enthusiasm.

You will then make the short journey to arguably the best-known distillery in the world, Glenfiddich. The renowned distillery has been in ownership of the Grant family since they opened in 1886, unlike many others in the industry that have been bought by tycoons across Scotland. A unique characteristic of the Glenfiddich distillery is that it is the only one in Scotland bottling takes place on-site.

The next chapter in your whisky journey is the Glenlivet distillery. Being one of the most famous whiskies in the world, Glenlivet was the first legal Scottish distillery in Speyside. During the tour, your guides will show you the whisky-making process as well as the distillery’s interesting past.

After the tour, your driver will escort you back to the The Station Hotel.

Day Seven - Through the Cairngorms to Edinburgh

    Royal Lochnagar, Edradour Distilleries

Transport: Executive vehicle & Private driver guide

    Accommodation: Waldorf Astoria, Edinburgh

After a leisurely breakfast, your driver will take you right into the heart of the Cairngorms to the Royal Lochnagar Distillery. The tour will turn back the clocks and will take you on a journey into its past. Interestingly, the distillery was mysteriously burnt to the ground in 1824 as well as its replacement in 1841. It’s called Royal Lachnagar due to its proximity to Balmoral Castle and the fact it has enjoyed visits from members of the royal family.

Your next destination will be the beautiful town of Pitlochry in the heart of Scotland. Here is where you will visit officially, ‘the smallest distillery in Scotland,’ Edradour. Established in 1825, the distillery was traditionally run by three men, but now there are just two. Despite its size, Edradour punches above its weight amongst the malt community by producing special malts that go into the “House of Lords” and “Clan Campbell” blends.

As your whisky journey ends, you will be transported to one of the beautiful capital cities in the world, Edinburgh, where you will spend your evening in the luxurious Waldorf Astoria Hotel, with views over Edinburgh Castle. Nestled proudly in Edinburgh’s West End, the Waldorf Astoria Hotel revels in the splendid scenery of its surroundings. Here you can dine in luxury and explore the city centre on your doorstep.

Day Eight - Scotland's Historic Capital

Scotch Whisky Experience & Edinburgh Half Day Tour

    Transport: Private Walking Guide

    Accommodation: Waldorf Astoria, Edinburgh

After breakfast, you can make your way to the entrance of the hotel where you will meet your tour guide of the day, who will be eager to share Edinburgh’s world-famous wonders, such as the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, St Giles Cathedral, Calton Hill and the Scott Monument. One of the city’s marvellous assets is the Old Town, where you will have the opportunity to take a step back through the centuries and lose yourself in the labyrinth of closes, wynds and bloody haunted tales.

The running theme of malt whisky on this trip will continue in late afternoon, where you will visit the Scotch Whisky Experience, which is home to the world’s biggest malt whisky collection. The five-star visitor attraction will build upon what you have already learned from the distilleries by providing you with a more general tour of Scottish whiskies. This will be your last whisky stop of the trip before you dine in the luxurious Amber restaurant in the evening.

    Day Nine - Departure

And so now is the time when your magical journey across Scotland comes to an end. We wish you all the best and hope that your adventure here will last long in the memory.
